Garden Offers Refuge for a Couple Celebrating 37 Years of Marriage
Spending their 37th wedding anniversary relaxing in the Baptist Cancer Services Serenity Garden is not exactly what Jennings and Betty Sue Dixon had in mind.
“This garden gives us a nice place to come between my doctor visits,” said Betty Sue who is going through treatment for sarcoma in her leg. “There’s a pleasant breeze out here, and we just bring our books and read.”
The Dixons have both battled cancer and been coming to Baptist’s Hederman Cancer Center since 2003. The Serenity Garden, located outside the cancer center, is a place of relaxation and refuge to escape from the sterile hospital environment.
“It seems like we come here either on one of our birthdays, anniversaries or both for several years,” added Jennings. “But as long as we are together, that’s all that matters. The garden makes it a nice place for us to just be together.”
Baptist added the Serenity Garden in 2007, and, since then, the Cyclist Curing Cancer Century Ride event helps raise money to keep the garden maintained.
This year’s ride will take place on Saturday, September 18 beginning at 7:30 a.m. at the Baptist Healthplex in Clinton. To register, call 601-968-1248 for an entry form or go online to www.mbhs.org/cyclistscuringcancer. Early registration fee is $40. After Friday, August 31, registration is $45.
